The scratching and licking that accompanies allergic dermatitis can leave your dog vulnerable to secondary infections, making an accurate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/services\/diagnostic-ultrasound.html\">diagnosis<\/a> and prompt treatment extremely important.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Environmental Allergens<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The primary source of highly uncomfortable allergies in dogs are environmental allergens, which include seasonal allergens plus other substances or critters that our dogs come across in their daily lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Common environmental allergens include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Bug bites (especially fleas)<\/li><li>Pollen<\/li><li>Mold<\/li><li>Dust mites<\/li><li>The dander of other animals or feathers<\/li><li>Grasses and trees<\/li><li>Chemicals<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Food Allergies<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dogs with food allergies can experience gastrointestinal distress such as vomiting or diarrhea, or have itchy skin, poor coat condition, and even chronic ear infections\u2014or a combination of tummy and skin problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While virtually any food or ingredient can trigger an allergic reaction, the following foods are the most common culprits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Dairy products<\/li><li>Meats such as beef, lamb, or chicken<\/li><li>Eggs<\/li><li>Soy&nbsp;<\/li><li>Wheat<\/li><li>Corn<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Avoidance is Key<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If your dog is diagnosed with an allergy, his comfort and quality of life depend heavily upon how well he can avoid the allergen coupled with the proper administration of appropriate allergy treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some tips for mitigating your dog\u2019s exposure and treating his allergies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Stay up-to-date with preventive care and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/blog\/make-sure-your-pets-parasite-prevention-is-up-to-date\/\">parasite prevention<\/a>.<\/li><li>Feed him a veterinarian-approved diet that doesn\u2019t contain his known allergen.<\/li><li>Wash his paws when he comes inside if he has a grass allergy.<\/li><li>If mold and mildew are his triggers, keep him indoors as much as possible on rainy or humid days.<\/li><li>Avoid the known allergen as much as possible, and use doctor-recommended treatments when applicable, such as medicated shampoos, topical treatments, omega 3-6-9 supplements, and customized allergy serums.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you think your dog is suffering from an allergy, please <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/\">contact us<\/a> right away.
