While it seems like something for dog owners to worry about, in most cases it is a common condition that occurs without serious repercussions in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/blog\/fact-versus-fiction-5-popular-dog-breed-myths-debunked\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dogs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While most reverse sneezes are completely harmless, there are some cases where it could be a sign of something more. The team at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parkside Animal Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is here to help you understand more about the reverse sneeze and what it means:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Reverse Sneeze<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A normal sneeze expels air out of the airways through the nose. Most sneezes occur because <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parkside.beyondindigopets.com\/the-never-ending-itch-allergies-in-pets\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an allergen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or a foreign body is irritating the airway. When your dog reverse sneezes, he or she pulls the air in through the airways suddenly, which results in a honking sound.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During a reverse sneeze, you may notice your pet stretches out his or her neck, pulls the lips back, and stiffens the body. This snorting and wheezing may go on for up to 15 seconds, which can seem scary, especially if this is the first reverse sneeze you have ever witnessed. The good news is that most of these cases are harmless.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the true cause of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.akc.org\/expert-advice\/health\/what-happens-when-a-dog-reverse-sneezes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reverse sneeze<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is still unknown, there are certain precipitors that are linked to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thebark.com\/content\/why-my-dog-honking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inspiratory paroxysmal respiration<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basically, any sneeze, whether it is normal or reverse, is an attempt to push out an irritant, like an allergen, foreign body, bug, or other substances. Brachycephalic breeds, such as pugs and bulldogs, are prone to this condition. Overexcitement can also lead to an episode.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the Sneeze Is Something More<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your pet has repeat episodes of reverse sneezing, we recommend you have them examined. There are certain medical conditions that can cause reverse sneezing. During the examination, we will look at clinical signs and determine if there is something causing a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/blog\/pet-emergency\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">respiratory problem<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as nasal tumours or polyps, tracheal collapse, an infection, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/blog\/spring-has-sprung-how-seasonal-changes-affect-pets\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or if there is a foreign body in the nasal passage. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/blog\/make-sure-your-pets-parasite-prevention-is-up-to-date\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nasal mites<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are also a common cause of reverse sneezing.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If necessary, we will conduct blood tests, X-rays, and other diagnostic testing to rule out any disease, illness, or injury.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helping Your Pet<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although in most cases reverse sneezing is completely harmless, pet owners still want to find ways to reduce or eliminate these episodes.
