This explains why we go to extremes to prepare our homes, work spaces, and garden areas.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But beyond securing a strong fence and gate, or checking all window screens and doorways, there is an additional way to prevent an accidental separation from your pet. One extra step \u2013 beyond a collar with ID tag \u2013 is microchipping your pet.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Details of Pet Microchips<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pet microchips are transponders. No bigger than a single grain of rice, they can be quickly implanted between the shoulder blades, just beneath the skin in the subcutaneous tissue. Microchips do not:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Move throughout the body<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have a power source<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Break down (in fact, most chips can last 25 years!)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transmit GPS signals<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Require anesthesia (although some owners elect to have it done during their pet\u2019s spay or neuter)<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How They Work<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every microchip has a unique registration number and a phone number of the chip\u2019s registry. When a microchip scanner is focused on the shoulder blades, the chip\u2019s radio frequency sends the information to the scanner\u2019s screen. The person operating the scanner can then enter the information in the microchip database to locate the pet\u2019s owner(s).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strange Fate<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animals tend to bolt through doors or hop over fences, and the rate of incidence depends <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/blog\/spring-has-sprung-how-seasonal-changes-affect-pets\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the season<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It could be that they\u2019re responding to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/blog\/pet-noise-anxiety-all-summer-long\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fight or flight<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> instinct during thunderstorms or fireworks, or simply trying to catch the neighborhood squirrel taunting them on the other side of the fence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes wandering or lost-looking pets are picked up by concerned citizens, or by animal control units. If they are not wearing the collar and ID tags (which can come off or be removed), there\u2019s no other way to find where they belong. Most veterinary hospitals and animal shelters are equipped with microchip scanners to facilitate a return home.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Wait, There\u2019s More<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microchipping your pet is one of the best things you can do to protect them. However, it is every owner\u2019s responsibility to register their contact information with the chip\u2019s manufacturer.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you change any contact information, it must be updated with the microchip\u2019s registry. Without this crucial step contact information won\u2019t be revealed if your pet is ever separated from you and scanned. In other words, without registration your pet\u2019s microchip will not keep them out of an animal shelter.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It should be noted that there are different chips and various registries. Luckily, universal cip readers are now the norm.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microchipping Your Pet<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microchipping your pet is not a substitute for your pet\u2019s collar and ID tags.
