But now that restrictions have eased somewhat, people are trying to establish a new normal \u2013 and pets are the first to notice.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some may have relished every extra moment with their special human, but near-constant attention and snuggles on demand may soon be waning. Pet separation anxiety is normal, but if symptoms are ignored long-lasting effects are possible.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alone, Not Alone,&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay at home orders caused a shift for family pets who went from spending 6-7 hours alone every day to having no time apart. Pets were immediately relied upon to boost our spirits and give us reasons to get out of bed in the morning. Pets embraced their new routines with unmatched enthusiasm.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good Feelings<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is science behind the attachment people share with their pets. Whether human, feline or canine, just simply being in the same room together can increase the production of oxytocin, the love hormone. The mutually beneficial relationship hinges upon spending quality time together, but quantity may soon be disrupted.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who Can Say?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pet separation anxiety is characterized as a profound fear of solitude. Pets that are deeply bonded to a single individual or a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/blog\/a-match-made-in-heaven-safety-for-kids-and-pets\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">variety of people in a household<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can feel very frightened at the prospect of them leaving.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if a pet has been alone before, they may still react adversely to sudden departures of their people. Also, many pets that were adopted right before or during the pandemic haven\u2019t been introduced to the concept of being left alone in the house.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Closer Look<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pet separation anxiety can range from mild to severe. Some breeds may be more susceptible to nervousness than others, while others endured <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/blog\/your-go-to-guide-for-adopting-a-shelter-pet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fear, abandonment or stress prior to adoption<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs and Symptoms<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some pets will block the exit so their people cannot leave. Others will start to pace worriedly, cry, or even withdraw and hide. If you notice these symptoms and any of the following, it\u2019s time to act:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive vocalizations<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panting<\/span><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/blog\/scooping-the-poop\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peeing and pooping inside the house<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or outside the litter box<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Destructive chewing, scratching, or digging at the door or windows<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Escape attempts<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive grooming<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exuberant greeting whenever you return<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cart Before the Horse<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because some of the symptoms of pet separation anxiety can be related to other medical issues, it\u2019s best to have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/services\/wellness-preventive-care.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your pet examined and tested<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Only then can we address behavior head-on.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Handling Pet Separation Anxiety<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the best ways to handle pet separation anxiety is to remain as calm and neutral as possible before you leave and when you return. Responding to a pet\u2019s exuberance can actually reinforce the behavior.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise and feed your pet a high-value food puzzle to distract them<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leave quietly for 5 minutes at a time<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increase time away from home when you see no signs of anxiety or stress, from 5 minutes several times a day to 15-20 minutes several times a day<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eventually you should be able to be gone for 2-3 hours at a time<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay patient and consistent; do not rush your pet into accepting their own solitude<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not scold or punish your pet for demonstrating any symptoms of pet separation anxiety<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s natural to feel concern for your pet\u2019s safety and wellness in your absence.
