While beautiful, the misery of seasonal allergies can be felt with constant sneezing, itching, watery eyes, headaches, and so forth. Your pet may be feeling the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/blog\/tick-season-is-here-are-you-ready\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">change in the weather<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, too, with their own reactions to allergens.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergies in pets are a common problem <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team Parkside Animal Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is here to help explain this common condition in pets and what you can do to help ease the itch.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Signs of Allergies in Pets<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although cats can develop environmental allergies, called atopy, dogs are more often diagnosed with this condition. In fact, 10% of all dogs suffer from some form of seasonal allergies. Our pets have more sensitive immune systems than our own, so it is no surprise many pets have allergic reactions to things in the environment.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How your pet reacts to these allergens may not seem like what you\u2019d consider an allergic response. We\u2019re used to our own symptoms, like sneezing, whereas pets <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/services\/dermatology.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">develop symptoms that typically affect the skin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of allergies in pets are:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Itchy skin<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Itchy, runny eyes<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inflammation<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dryness, scaling of the skin<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eye infection<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bumps on skin<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of fur<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in appetite<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lethargy<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your pet may be very uncomfortable during an allergic reaction and can be prone to infection. The good news is that we can diagnose your pet by isolating the allergens causing the problem through allergy testing. Along with this, we can provide medications to help reduce and treat the symptoms.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At-Home Care<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also make some changes at home to relieve some of your pet\u2019s symptoms and the effects of allergies. Some simple steps you can take include:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bathe your pet weekly in a hypoallergenic shampoo.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speak to your veterinarian about the most nutritious diet for your pet to support their immune system.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep windows and doors closed and use a HEPA filter for your air conditioning unit or as a stand-alone air purifier.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequently vacuum the home and launder your pet\u2019s bedding or bed each week.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Close windows in the car and use the air when you travel with your pet.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wipe off your pet\u2019s feet when you return from being outdoors or use dog booties.<\/span><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you suspect your pet has seasonal allergies, please bring them to see us.
