But, if you have dogs, you know that your dogs can\u2019t stay inside all the time. There are times that your dog needs to answer the call of nature, not to mention run off some of that pent up energy!&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may know how to protect your dog from freezing temperatures, but have you given much thought to winter paw care? Paw pads are sensitive and need extra attention when snow, ice, and cold are at play.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately there are several ways to protect your pet\u2019s paws this winter. Keep reading for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parkside Animal Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s best tips on winter paw care.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ready To Go<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re walking this winter with your dog, try and notice how cold the sidewalks are and tailor the length of your walks accordingly. If the sidewalks are too cold to your bare feet, chances are they are uncomfortable for your pet, too.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To help protect your pet\u2019s sensitive paws, you may want to try booties. You may love \u2018em, you may hate \u2018em, but booties may be the right answer for winter paw care. Although finding the perfect fit can be a challenge, booties can protect your pet\u2019s paws from dryness and cracking, offer extra warmth, and prevent injury.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll want to train your pet to wear booties around the house first, offering praise, treats, and other rewards. Then, when your pet seems more comfortable, start short walks outside. You\u2019ll work up to longer jaunts in no time.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good Grooming<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ice balls and snowpack can easily get caught in between toes and cause problems. To prevent this, trim the long hairs in between your pet\u2019s toes, which tend to catch debris and ice as your pet walks.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping your pet\u2019s nails short is another good grooming practice for winter paw care. Shorter nails make it easier for your pet to walk and can prevent injury such as torn nails and lacerations.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another good practice is to use a product designed to protect delicate, sensitive skin. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/musherssecret.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Musher\u2019s Secret<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a paw balm that uses all natural and non toxic waxes and oils to protect your pet\u2019s paw pads from severe temperatures and chemicals. Please remember to wash all products off your pet\u2019s feet after playing outdoors.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After you <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/blog\/wheels-and-paws-simple-strategies-for-walking-with-your-baby-and-dog\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">walk your pet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, soak her paws in warm water and towel dry. This will minimize any salt, ice, and chemicals that your pet may have stepped on during her stroll.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winter Paw Care and Safety<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of salt, many products that are designed as de-icers can be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/blog\/pet-poisoning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">harmful to your pet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Many pets will lick their paws after walking, so again, drying feet after time outside is necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We recommend using pet-safe ice melts or salts on your property. When you\u2019re out and about, try to steer your pet away from areas that appear to have been heavily treated.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you notice any <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/blog\/a-practical-guide-how-to-know-if-your-pet-is-in-pain\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">soreness, irritation, or discomfort<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, please <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/#contact\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">let us know<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
