Your veterinarian can help make this a reality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is a Senior Pet?&nbsp;<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally speaking, your pet is a senior at the age of 7. This varies to some degree with species and breed. Your veterinarian can determine when your pet falls into the senior life stage, one reason that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/blog\/beneath-the-surface-the-importance-of-routine-pet-wellness-exams\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preventive care exams<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> annually is so important.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Age Is Not A Disease<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some pet owners notice their pets slowing down and chalk it up to old age. But age is not a disease! Older animals can be active, healthy, and comfortable with just a few adjustments to their environment and attentiveness to the manageable conditions that often accompany old age.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senior pets are at risk for obesity. While weight is only one component of a healthy senior, keeping them lean improves their mobility, their overall general health, and their longevity.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s great to start with a physical exam with your pet\u2019s veterinarian. We can do a nose to tail assessment, talk to you about your pet\u2019s behavior and history, and recommend <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/services\/diagnostic-ultrasound.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">screening tests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to check for early signs of disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early Detection<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we screen for certain diseases early, we not only detect small problems before they become big issues, we also establish a normal baseline of results for your individual pet. We can use these later to determine if the disease is in the early stages, and treat appropriately. Early detection of disease means less discomfort and better outcomes for your pet, at less of an expense to you in the long run.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What To Watch For<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any change in behavior should be a red flag, and a call to action to schedule an appointment with your veterinarian. In addition, be on the lookout for:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in weight, especially weight loss<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased thirst<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased urination<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in stool or bathroom habits (house soiling)<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hiding more than usual<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clinginess<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hair loss or thinning, brittle coat<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New lumps, bumps, or swelling<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty breathing or panting while at rest<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mobility issues<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Persistent cough<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bouts of weakness<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cloudy eyes, bumping into things<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disorientation, increased aggression, or sensitivity to noise<\/span><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/services\/dentistry.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foul mouth odor<\/span><\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comfort at Home for Senior Pets<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve addressed any urgent health concerns with your veterinarian, turn your focus to keeping your senior safe and comfortable at home. Here are some tips for creature comforts for your senior pet.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With safety in mind, remember that your senior may have more trouble navigating stairs, getting into the car, and navigating hills and uneven terrain. What\u2019s more, they may not realize they are less agile than they used to be.
