While it may be your natural inclination to share the best things in life with your pet, giving them certain people foods can have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/blog\/pet-emergency\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">terrible consequences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The good news is that you can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/blog\/pet-poisoning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">avoid a pet poisoning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and still shower them with love with healthy alternatives.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Usual Suspects<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At first glance, the list of foods to avoid can seem pretty long. Of course, there are some ingredients that shouldn\u2019t be shared due to the possibility of weight gain or the risk of causing pancreatitis (e.g., rich, fatty foods). <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The items listed below should never be given to pets or left out for them to find on their own:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chocolate (the darker the chocolate, the more toxic it can be)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coffee and all caffeinated beverages, such as energy drinks<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xylitol (found in sugar-free gum, mints, peanut butter, and baked goods)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Onions and garlic<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grapes, raisins, and currants<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Macadamia nuts<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avocados<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unbaked yeast dough<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you ever have any doubt about a food that your pet seems to want badly, it\u2019s best to err on the side of caution. To prevent a pet poisoning, consider one of the healthy options listed below.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs of a Pet Poisoning<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The symptoms triggered by a pet poisoning depend on the type and quantity of the toxin. Some cause problems in the kidneys or liver while others affect the neurological or digestive systems. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never ignore the following symptoms:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea (with or without blood)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seizures<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lethargy or depression<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inappetence<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bruising<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irregular heartbeat<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Problems urinating<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/#contact\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contact us<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> immediately if you notice any of these signs. The following suggestions are satisfying, healthy alternatives (but please only share in moderation):<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lean meat (always boneless)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xylitol-free peanut butter <\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plain yogurt<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bite-sized carrot pieces (lightly steamed)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low-sodium canned green beans <\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fresh fruit, such as watermelon, cantaloupe, or apple slices (no seeds)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canned, unsweetened pumpkin<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scrambled eggs<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Small amounts of cooked tuna or salmon (if canned, avoid the oil-packed variety)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steamed sweet potatoes <\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re always happy to provide more information about safe options for pets and people to bond together.
