They\u2019re cute, fun to be with, and absolutely lovable. But even the most well-behaved dogs can have some pretty unsavory habits. Drinking out of the toilet, humping, and butt scooting top the list of potentially confusing behaviors, but poop eating (also known as coprophagia) takes the cake. If your dog eats poop, there could be specific reasons why they do it. The good news? There are ways to get past this habit.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is It Normal?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poop eating is generally regarded as a normal canine behavior. Frustrating as it can be, eradication attempts aren\u2019t always 100% successful. What\u2019s important is to understand why your dog eats poop, then you can approach possibly changing the behavior in various ways.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why Dogs Eat Poop<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a fact. Dogs eat poop and they don\u2019t seem to discriminate at all. They\u2019ll eat their own, the feces of other dogs, and the waste of other species, as well. Interestingly enough, most dogs pass on poop that\u2019s not fresh.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chomp Chomp<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coprophagy is characterized by eating feces, and dogs learn the behavior early in life. However, this behavior is not connected to age, gender, ease of housebreaking, age of separation from mother, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/services\/surgery.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spay\/neuter status<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers have evidence that the behavior is more common in dogs that live among other animals, as there is more to go around. Also:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Submissive dogs may eat the poop of the dominant individuals. <\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mother dogs are very efficient when cleaning up after her puppies, a behavior that is instinctual and normal (waste would attract predators in the wild). <\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ancestors of domestic dogs, wolves, would eat excrement to prevent parasitic larvae from hatching in the den.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In these respects, a dog that eats poop does so because of their environment and inherited behavioral traits.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More To It<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s easy to dismiss coprophagia as a disgusting habit, but sometimes a dog eats poop because they\u2019re missing something in their diet. Likewise, an animal that\u2019s not absorbing enough nutrients from food, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/blog\/make-sure-your-pets-parasite-prevention-is-up-to-date\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a pet with parasites<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or that\u2019s struggling with issues of the pancreas, they may resort to poop eating.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you ever see poop eating accompanied by diarrhea, weight loss, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/blog\/pet-emergency\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">obvious signs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of malnourishment like lethargy, it\u2019s time to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/blog\/pet-emergency\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bring your pet in for an exam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My Dog Eats Poop<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There could be other reasons why a dog eats poop, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lacking digestive enzymes<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trace mineral deficiency<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Actual hunger<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overfeeding<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boredom<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may be time to investigate your pet\u2019s food and daily portions to see if they are contributing to this behavior. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, to help mitigate this behavior, be sure that your dog doesn\u2019t have access to any poop.
