It also makes Canada the first wealthy nation in the world to fully legalize marijuana (medicinal marijuana has been legal since 2001).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While marijuana enthusiasts are understandably pleased with this new law, pet owners must take care to prioritize their pets\u2019 safety when it comes to marijuana. At <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parkside Animal Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we want to make sure our valued readers understand the risks involved when it comes to pot and pets.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pot and Pets: The Effects of Exposure<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The increasing availability of marijuana in our society means a greater chance that pets will be exposed, even if you don\u2019t personally use it. Pets are much more susceptible to the effects of THC (the active ingredient in marijuana products), and it doesn\u2019t take much for it to become toxic. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pets are most commonly exposed to marijuana via secondhand smoke inhalation, the consumption of edible products (brownies, cookies, gummies, etc.), or from residue left behind on surfaces. Marijuana edibles are of particular concern when it comes to pets (mainly dogs) who tend to seek out people food. Some edibles may also contain chocolate, xylitol, or other potential pet toxins.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to Seek Help<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clinical signs of marijuana toxicity in pets can be observed within minutes to hours after exposure. Symptoms include:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive salivation <\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleepiness or fatigue<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of coordination, stumbling<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dilated pupils<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tremors or seizures<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disorientation<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vocalizing<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inappropriate urination<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sound or light sensitivity<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bloodshot eyes<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you know or suspect your pet has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/blog\/pet-emergency\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exposed to marijuana<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, bring them to our hospital right away or visit the nearest emergency veterinary clinic for treatment. Don\u2019t be afraid to tell your veterinarian that your pet has accidentally ingested a marijuana product \u2013 this will make the diagnosis faster and easier, and it could even save your pet\u2019s life. Your veterinarian\u2019s only concern is for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parksidevet.ca\/blog\/beneath-the-surface-the-importance-of-routine-pet-wellness-exams\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health and safety of your pet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can a Veterinarian Prescribe Medical Marijuana?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, the answer is no. It\u2019s illegal for veterinarians to prescribe or obtain marijuana products for pets, and there\u2019s very little research regarding dosage, frequency of administration, or side effects.
